It was announced that U.S. Army Gen. Wesley Clark would host a special, $100-per-ticket event in a La Cañada home in April 2006 to announce his support for Russ Warner, who was running against incumbent David Dreier to represent the 26th Congressional District.

Following a year-long, nationwide search, 39-year-old Richard Schulhof was named to the newly created position of executive director of Descanso Gardens. Sue Beatty, then president of the Descanso Gardens Guild, announced Schulhof’s hiring.

La Cañada High School’s interim principal William Porter in April 1986 named the school’s successful junior varsity coach, Tom Hofman, to the position of head varsity basketball coach. Hofman replaced Bob Dueker.

Forty Years Ago

The local chapter of Keep America Beautiful spearheaded a week-long series of activities in La Cañada that it dubbed “Plant-up, Paint-up and Clean-up.” In conjunction with the effort, then Honorary Mayor Nila Barkley pronounced April 24, 1976 as Keep America Beautiful Day.

Flintridge Riding Club was preparing for the 45th annual Children’s Horse Show, sponsored by the Flintridge-La Cañada Guild of Huntington Memorial Hospital.

Sixty Years Ago

A mobile X-ray unit visited the local public elementary schools in the spring of 1956 to scan students for signs of illnesses such as tuberculosis. At Oak Grove School, 450 students were screened; at Paradise Canyon the machine was used on 325 kids and at La Cañada Elementary, 435 children were X-rayed.
