La Cañada History: Town’s first post office razed

Ten Years Ago

In the wake of the September 2006 recall of spinach due to an E.coli scare that alarmed the nation, followed a few weeks later by an announcement that the vegetable could once again be eaten, La Cañada grocery stores were still not carrying any fresh spinach products.

“It’s a huge loss to the farmer and the grocery store,” the manager of Ralphs Fresh Fare told the Valley Sun. The spinach involved in the outbreak, which led to illnesses and deaths in 26 states, came from the California counties of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Clara.

Twenty Years Ago

A tractor trailer rig traveling eastbound on the 210 Freeway burst into flames, with the driver barely escaping injury. The incident closed down the freeway near the Angeles Crest Highway exit.

Thirty Years Ago

With a turbine from a dentist’s drill and a custom hybrid integrated circuit, a three-member team from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory developed the first handheld sensor to measure electric fields around direct current power lines.

Forty Years Ago

St. Francis High School was preparing for the construction of a three-level addition to its campus. The estimated cost for the project was $500,000.

Fifty Years Ago

The demolition of two buildings, including La Cañada’s first post office, took place at the southeast corner of Foothill Boulevard and Indiana Avenue. A developer involved in the project said a new complex there would house a Topper Steakhouse, an Orange Julius stand and two commercial buildings. Today, Magpie’s Grill and Lupe’s Place share the space with other businesses.

Sixty Years Ago

Jimmy A. Williams of Rancho Santa Fe was appointed manager of the Flintridge Riding Club. Williams was nationally recognized as one of the outstanding horsemen and trainers of his era.
