La Cañada History: Electronic ballot boxes debut

Ten Years Ago

The November 2006 election saw local residents Carol Liu and Anthony Portantino elected to their first terms in the state Senate and Assembly, respectively. Of the 13,256 registered voters in La Cañada, 5,163 cast ballots. It was the first time the new Inka Vote Plus electronic ballot boxes were used at precincts here; the system had been purchased that year by Los Angeles County for $25 million.

Twenty Years Ago

On Halloween night in 1996 three area teens reported having been set upon and robbed of their trick-or-treat candy in the 1300 block of Descanso Drive by a handful of attackers they described as being between 16 and 20 years old.

Thirty Years Ago

The La Cañada Flintridge City Council learned from a staff report that 220 horses were being kept on 86 residential parcels in the city. Local horse owners had been required to register their animals by Oct. 31, 1986, or face a $250 fine.

Forty Years Ago

With the passage of cityhood during the November 1976 election, there were approximately 950 homes in the new city of La Cañada Flintridge that did not have local postal addresses. Of those, 900 were in Flintridge, part of Pasadena’s 91103 Zip Code, and the rest were in a previously unincorporated area in southwest La Cañada that had always had a Montrose address.

Fifty Years Ago

Voters in November 1966 elected Ronald Reagan as governor, along with La Cañada resident Robert Finch as lieutenant governor. In other election news, Cecil Osoff of La Cañada, then California Teacher of the Year, was the winner in the Pasadena Junior College District Area 1 trusteeship race.

Sixty Years Ago

The tennis committee of the La Cañada Junior High School Fathers Council in the fall of 1956 drafted an agreement with the Pasadena Department of Recreation whereby an instructor would be hired to teach tennis year round at the new tennis courts on the junior high’s Cornishon Avenue campus.
