La Cañada History: Fashion show encourages local patronage

Ten Years Ago

The first meeting of the newly formed Islamic Congregation of La Cañada Flintridge was held at the Community Center, drawing 75 people of all ages. Also on hand were then- Mayor Greg Brown and Anthony Portantino, at the time serving in the state Assembly. Among the new group’s stated goals was reaching out to the community to educate others and bridge a gap of misunderstandings between those of the Islamic faith and other religions.

Twenty Years Ago

Damages were set at about $60,000 after a faulty fireplace gas line was blamed for a blaze in a two-story home on upper Palm Drive. Three county fire rigs answered the call, extinguishing the Monday afternoon fire in just over an hour.

Thirty Years Ago

With radio personality Roger Barkley as emcee, the seventh annual “Shop in La Cañada Flintridge” fashion show provided a lively program for 230 attendees. Chairing the event was Dottie Hazel, then secretary-manager of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Assn.

Forty Years Ago

As the new city of La Cañada Flintridge was organized and its first city council seated, a report was issued that suggested the local chamber of commerce should act as a “spokesman” to the new council and a vehicle by which the city’s business segment could become more influential.

Fifty Years Ago

The county Board of Supervisors approved the deposit of $38,100 with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to be used on flood control channel work in La Cañada’s Winery Canyon.

Sixty Years Ago

Librarian Leone Loos reported an outbreak of book vandalism and theft at the La Cañada branch of the county library system. Volumes of the World Book and Colliers encyclopedias were missing and pages had been torn out of the Encyclopedia Britannica, Loos told the Valley Sun.
