La Cañada History: Trails Council dedicates new crossing

Ten Years Ago

City officials and the La Cañada Flintridge Trails Council hosted a dedication of the Indiana Avenue over-crossing trail king, a key element in a long range goal for a complete loop around the city. The newly completed link made use of a utility crossover bridge spanning the 210 Freeway.

Twenty Years Ago

A Caltrans Park & Ride lot then located on Foothill Boulevard near the entrance to the 2 Freeway became a bone of contention because the agency had closed it to public use without notice and parked Embree buses there for a prolonged period. The La Cañada Flintridge City Council instructed staff to notify Caltrans it had 60 days to remove the buses or it would face legal action. The city maintained that the closure was in violation of an agreement between it and the transportation department.

Thirty Years Ago

Properties in the Paradise Valley neighborhood at the top of Ocean View Boulevard and other areas in the northernmost reaches of La Cañada Flintridge were blanketed with 2 inches of snow that fell on Feb. 24, 1987.

The City Council granted a conditional use permit for the project to build the Flint Canyon Tennis Club on Berkshire Avenue.

La Cañada High School student Candy Flock, 15, and her gelding Alate Diamond won three first-place trophies in the National Date Festival Horse Show held in Indio during February 1967.

Sixty Years Ago

It was announced that the Jet Propulsion Laboratory was planning to acquire 125 acres of adjoining hillside to meet U.S. Army regulations. The land sought, then owned by resident Matt Flynn’s Admiral Building Co., was substantially larger than JPL’s then-holding of 80 acres. It was the Army’s position that additional land was needed so rocket test cells and other equipment could be safely relocated away from buildings where most of the lab’s personnel were working.
