La Cañada History: Protesters turn out before Pasadena Pops concert at Descanso Gardens, seek support for musicians

Ten Years Ago

Concert-goers arriving at Descanso Gardens for a July 21 Pasadena Pops Orchestra concert were greeted by two women protesters, alerting them to news that 65 musicians had been told their services would no longer be needed after that summer series and that they would not receive severance pay.

Twenty Years Ago

The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. received the donation of a new Ford 429 V-8 engine to power the animation of the 1998 Rose Parade float themed “High Flying Fun.” The gift, valued at $7,000 to $10,000, was made by Bob Wondries Ford in Alhambra.

Thirty Years Ago

Thirteen months after the project had been working its way through the City Hall approval process, the Planning Commission approved a small shopping center in the western section of La Cañada Flintridge that would house an El Pollo Loco restaurant. The site in the 2200 block of Foothill Boulevard had previously housed a used-car lot operated by Hauter Ford.

Forty Years Ago

Faulty wiring was blamed for an early morning house fire on Los Amigos Drive that injured a resident there and caused about $40,000 in damages.

Fifty Years Ago

In hopes of helping to keep the business corridor looking tidy, the La Cañada Rotary Club donated 10 large trash receptacles to be distributed along Foothill Boulevard. The donation was valued at $900.

Sixty Years Ago

The La Cañada Thursday Club held a “Salute Your Native State” costume party in the gardens of a member’s home. The first prize was shared by Mrs. Stuart Vaughahn, dressed as a pilgrim (Mass.) and Mrs. Albert Lester, who arrived wearing an early California wedding gown.
