La Cañada History: Paradise Canyon student repeats big win at county spelling bee
Ten Years Ago
Paradise Canyon Elementary student Zhi-He Low, for the second year in a row, captured first place in the Los Angeles County Spelling Bee held in the spring of 2007. His secret to success? In addition to being an avid reader, “I just study the roots of the words,” he told a reporter.
Twenty Years Ago
Matt Whisenant, a 1989 graduate of La Cañada High where he was a baseball standout, made the 25-man roster of the Florida Marlins in the spring of 1997. During that summer, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals. Whisenant is now the head coach of the LCHS Spartan baseball team.

Thirty Years Ago
Nearly 200 golfers hit the fairways at La Cañada Country Club for the inaugural Roger Barkley Charity Golf Tournament. Comic Tim Conway greeted the players all day long at the first tee. Funds raised by the event were earmarked for the La Cañada Youth House (community center) and the Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA’s outreach program.
Forty Years Ago
For the first time in the history of the Town & Country Fine Arts Club of La Cañada, a man was honored with the club’s award of the year. The recipient was Dean Logsdon, who as of 1977 had taught music in the La Cañada public school system for 27 years.
Fifty Years Ago
Church of the Lighted Window marked its 70th birthday on April 9, 1967. Invited to speak at the worship services was the Rev. Lawrence J. Weinert, who had served as pastor of the church from 1948 to 1960. The church, today known as La Cañada Congregational Church, was organized by 15 area residents in 1897. Its well-known Tiffany-lighted window was installed on April 9, 1925, in memory of pioneer members Jacob and Ammoretta Lanterman.
Sixty Years Ago
A fire of mysterious origin destroyed a building housing stables, a tack room and garage at a property in the 4600 block of Alta Canyada Road just before midnight on Saturday, March 31, 1957. Also destroyed in the blaze were two luxury cars and a horse trailer. While four fire companies were still working at the scene very early the next morning, sheriff’s units responded to a call that burning materials had been thrown onto a driveway on Solliden Lane. No damage was reported at that second site, but malicious mischief was suspected.
