Young rider captures Liz Blackwelder Trophy during Flintridge horse show

Continuing a tradition that was established 10 years ago by a La Cañada woman who wanted to encourage young riders, the Liz Blackwelder Perpetual Trophy was awarded April 30 to Newhall resident Emily Williams during the 96th annual Flintridge Horse Show.

In 2007, Blackwelder conceived the award, then designed the silver trophy and donated it to be presented to the champion rider in the Junior Hunter Classic competition at the annual show sponsored by the Flintridge La Cañada Guild of Huntington Hospital, of which she was a founding member. Blackwelder, who passed away in January 2014, was herself a lifelong equestrian and trails advocate.

Emily Williams, the 2017 champion who captured the perpetual trophy, has been riding for seven years. She trains with David Josiah and Stephanie Hovey and owns her champion horse, Beach Boy.

She is the granddaughter of La Canada Flintridge resident Porter Williams. Her father, James Williams, grew up in this city.

The Flintridge Horse Show, previously known as the Flintridge Children’s Horse Show, is held at the Flintridge Riding Club. It is the longest running continuous horse show in the country.
