Organizations: Docent training slated for Lanterman House

Share

Training classes will be held this summer for individuals interested in becoming a docent at Lanterman House, La Cañada’s historical museum.

Docents will be given at least four training sessions in July and August. Topics covered will include the history of the Crescenta-Cañada Valley, the pioneering Lanterman family, the Arts and Crafts movement in America, the restoration of Lanterman House and the art of being a docent. Prospective docents will complete their training by shadowing current docents on tours to observe their techniques and interaction with the museum’s visitors.

Docents are asked to become a member of the museum, commit to at least six volunteer hours each month and be willing to tour both student and adult visitors. Tours take place on Tuesdays, Wednesday mornings and on alternate Sundays. Docents also help out during special events at the museum, which most frequently take place on Sundays.

Since its opening in 1993, Lanterman House docents have toured more than 40,000 guests and conducted in-classroom and on-site programs for more than 13,000 third-grade students who attend schools in La Cañada, La Crescenta and Glendale. The museum is located at 4420 Encinas Drive. To learn more about volunteering as a docent, call (818) 790-1421 or email Executive Director Melissa Patton at mpatton.lanterman@gmail.com.
