Kiwanians tout literacy through book donation

Share

The Children’s Literacy Committee of Kiwanis Club of La Cañada recently donated 275 books to Union Avenue Elementary School in Los Angeles.

For the past year, Kiwanians tutored second-grade students at the urban school. Kiwanis Vice President Chuck Terhune and Pat Flynn delivered the collection of books to the campus to encourage continued summer reading. They handed out books to more than 200 students, some of whom started reading immediately while others showed them off to friends, according to a Kiwanis official. A teacher commented that even previously reluctant readers were excited about the gift. Many students lined up to shake hands and say thank you to Terhune and Flynn.

Volumes that were not given directly to students that day were gifted to the school’s library.

Information on the Kiwanis Club can be found at www.lacanadakiwanis.org. The club meets at noon every Wednesday in Van de Kamp Hall at Descanso Gardens. New members are welcome.
