Nine scholarships were awarded this year by Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic, a community-based organization comprising member volunteers from the Glendale, Burbank, La Cañada, La Crescenta, Sunland and Tujunga areas. The organization's charter, established 70 years ago, is to support young women seeking higher education.
Amari Dennis, a recent graduate of Flintridge Preparatory School who will attend Tufts University, won the group’s Mary Ellen Gilstrap Memorial Scholarship. The award is named after the late Gilstrap, a member of Chi Omega sorority when she attended
Those winning the group's merit scholarships for sorority members in good standing are 2015 La Cañada High School graduates Catharine Cea, a member of Delta Delta Delta at U.C. Santa Barbara and Sophia Lamb, a member of Kappa Alpha Theta at Clemson University.
Members of the La Cañada High School Class of 2017 who won merit scholarships from the organization are Amelia Bergen, who will attend the University of Puget Sound; Sarah Bhaskaran, who will attend U.C. Berkeley; Morgan Bowman, who will attend U.C. Davis and Taleen Sarkissian, who will attend U.C. Irvine. Recipients who graduated from Flintridge Preparatory School include Lilly Maxfield, who will attend UCL.A, and Madelena Pawlek, who will attend Harvey Mudd College.
Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic officers and volunteers for the 2016-17 year include President Kim Westhoff, Alpha Omicron Pi; Vice President Elaine Chapman, Kappa Kappa Gamma; Secretary Jerri Johnson, Sigma Sigma Sigma; Treasurer Julie Weller, Delta Zeta; Benefit Co-Chair Lynne Graves, Alpha Delta Pi; Scholarship Social Chair Deb Ann Orfalea, Zeta Tau Alpha; Scholarship Chair Janice Paul, Delta Delta Delta; and Files/Recommendations Chair Georgine Archer, Delta Gamma. Scholarship Committee members include Rachel Clugston, Delta Phi Epsilon, Marta de Paula Cea, Pi Beta Phi and Teri Craft, Alpha Gamma Delta.
