Oakmont Country Club was the setting for the recent Stardusters-Alaroma black-tie dinner dance.

“Dancing in Washington, D.C.” was the theme set by presidents Gigi and Jim Schleuter. Dance chairs were Liz and Bob Craven. Lynne Thompson, who attended with her husband Joe, created the red, white and blue table centerpieces that were studded with miniature American flags.

The Jack Lantz Band, under the direction of Lane Rickman, provided the danceable tunes. Among those enjoying the evening were Polly and Brent Allen, Fran and Terry Buchanan, Grace and Dave Cashion, Francie and Jerry Crichton, Ginny and Bob Doyle, Margaret and Tom Dunn, Gerri and Carson English, Sue Franzen and Jim Nigra, Janis and Riccardo Gallo, Mary and Daryal Gant, and Marion and Paul Greene.

There was a lovely gathering at the historic Lanterman House on Sunday, April 3, when about 60 guests joined current and past La Cañada Valley Sun employees to celebrate the newspaper’s 70th birthday party. Carol Cormaci, managing editor of the paper, welcomed guests and moderated the event.

A beautiful cake decorated with a copy of the newspaper’s first front page, tears and all, edged by suns, was created by Cakery Bakery for the celebration.

Some of the returning Valley Sun people, introduced themselves and told a little about their time at the Valley Sun. Among those in attendance were Ruth Douglass, Anne Hills, Shirley Pasqua, April Sperling, Diane McManamon, Laurie Welch, Pat Ryburn, Fran Evans and Kae Cormaci. Oh, I almost forgot Neal Brockmeyer, who said when he was a boy he was a subscription seller that went door to door. “I never had a rejection because everyone wanted the Valley Sun,” Neal said.

As for me, you have seen me here in this space since 1982 when the longtime publisher and editor, the late Joe DuPlain, hired me as social editor for the paper. The column was first called Chit Chat From Here & There but is now known as the Valley Line. Thank you readers, I still find being in this space as a columnist an exciting place to be where I can tell your stories.
