The Valley Line: Kiwanis Club goes ‘Summer Casual’

Share

Oh my goodness, this latest heat wave, coupled with the smokey conditions caused by the Sand fire have truly tested my patience and the ability of my antiquated air-conditioning unit.

In spite of the heat, the music plays on at Descanso Gardens. Thursday, the last night of the series, will feature one of the premier guitar ensembles, the New West Guitar Group comprising guitarists Perry Smith, John Storie and Will Brahm. Appearing with them will be vocalist Sara Gazarek.

This Saturday, July 30, the Pasadena Pops with Michael Feinstein will present a concert entirely devoted to the legacy of Frank Sinatra. Hear some of Sinatra’s biggest hits and maybe a few you’ve never heard before as Feinstein shares both his legendary music and personal anecdotes recalling the life and times of Ol’ Blue Eyes.

On Sunday, July 31, “Music in the Park” at La Cañada Flintridge’s Memorial Park will have the band “Past Action Heroes” playing music of the ‘80s. After the music the Disney movie, “Inside Out,” will play. Bring the family, even your dogs for a fun evening.

Ellie Wildermuth opened up her lovely home for members and guests of the La Cañada Kiwanis Club for an evening social gathering.

“Summer Casual” was the theme of the party and the weather was ideal for poolside socializing. More than 75 guests came to enjoy the beautiful summer eve and lively conversations.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying the bartending expertise of Don Walls, who mixed up perfect margaritas for sipping. It was the ideal drink to go along with the south-of-the-border cuisine. The taco chef cooked each and everyone’s entrée choice from sizzling flautas to quesadillas with plenty of chips and guacamole for all.

Among some of the guests were Rhoda and Howard Backer, Cindy Crane, Diane Della Valle, Bobbie and Clyde Hemphill, Doris Horwith, Bill Koury, Michael and Nancy Leininger, Pat Liddell, Linda Magarian, Tom Passanisi, Patty Prange, Gigi and Jim Schlueter, Joel and Nana Smith, Bob Wallace, Maria Drummond, Mary and Daryal Gant, and Harriet Hammons.

Maureen Bond, public relations director for the club, says that upcoming events for the organization include its renown Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting, set for Sunday, Sept. 25 and the new officer installation dinner on Sept. 28.
