The La Cañada Thursday Club ladies celebrated the opening of a new club year with a festive “Welcome Back” social.

Carrying out a “South of the Border” theme, the dining tables were set with brightly colored cloths. Of course the cuisine was Mexican with many savory and spicy offerings prepared by Chefs on Fire. Yes, margaritas were the signature cocktail to sip while catching up on summer news. There was also dessert bar with the fixings for custom-made sundaes.

Among them Gale and Tom Caswell, Barbara and Jack Dawson, Sandy and Fred Engler, Sue Beatty, Louise and Bob Beggs, Toni and Bruce Henning, Mary Ann and Rex Heeseman, Marie and John Ford, Lee Johnson, Clay and Tom Kempson, Anita and Rouben Khodadian, Rosemarie and Gene Lossone,Yvonne Marchosky and Carter Tutwiler, Shon and Frank Whipple, Jean and Ron Zink, Terry and Jeanie Kay, Alice and Jim Ryan, Pat Ryburn, Kim and Bob Ortiz, Sheri and David Morton, Karen and Ron Millman, Cathy and Barry Sedlik, Linda and Stan Pebsworth, Jody and George Platisa, just to name a few.

I had a chance to stop by the St. Bede Catholic Church’s sixth birthday party on Oct. 2. It was great fun with a more than a couple of hundred of people in attendance. It had a Western theme, “Hoedown at Bede Ranch.” Especially colorful was Rev. Msgr. Antonio Cacciapuoti, who made his appearance looking every bit like a cowboy.

It was a family affair, with lots of games for the kids and a fantastic Country Western band playing for energetic dancers.

A finger lickin’ dinner of prime rib and chicken was served up and dessert include little apple tarts and ice cream cones.

Ellen and Anthony Portantino hosted the latest La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. Happy Hour mixer. It was the usual happy format, with guests bringing hors d’oeuvres and desserts to share.

The organization’s biggest annual fund-raiser, “An Evening of Wine and Roses” is coming up. It will be held on the evening of Sunday, Nov. 6 at La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.

The 2017 Tournament of Roses Royal Court will be introduced. Taking her bow as a court member will be Natalie Petrosian, a student at La Cañada High School. On Oct. 20, the Rose Queen will be announced and will make one of her first appearances with her court at this event.

For tickets to “An Evening of Wine and Roses,” visit lcftra.org by Oct. 26, when reservations are due. This fundraiser will help our float, “Backyard Rocketeer,” get built and decorated so it can roll down Pasadena’s famed Colorado Boulevard on Jan. 2 during the 2017 Rose Parade.
