The Valley Line: Golf club hosts hospital gathering

Share

After what seemed like too much rain for some people, the skies cleared, and the evening sky was star-studded when more than 200 guests entered Annandale Golf Club for a happy gathering of USC Verdugo Hills Hospital physicians, administrative staff, hospital board members and guests.

Gloria Gomez, USC VHH director of medical staff, was an amazing committee of one as she coordinated the event she said was designed to bring together medical staff members and board members to socialize in an environment outside the hospital.

“Our physician staff is a true family, and they care so much for this foothill community,” she said.

There was no detail overlooked as the evening unfolded beginning with cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres. Guests then moved on to an array of casino games to be played. Joyful hilarity was experienced at the photo booth, where there were whimsical props to try on. An expansive buffet table was centered by an intricately carved ice sculpture.

It was fun for me to meet and chat with Dr. Alex Weber and his wife, Ellen, who are newlyweds of only four months. Dr. Weber is assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at USC Keck School of Medicine and he has stepped forward to donate his time to care for the athletes on sports teams at La Cañada High School.

Keith Hobbs, chief executive of the hospital who grew up in our foothills, greeted attendees, and he then introduced Dr. Steven Hartford, VHH chief of staff, who honored physicians for their medical service.

Honored for 40 years of service were Ignacio Acosta, M.D. and David Thompson, M.D. Those recognized for 30 years of service were Stephen Riffenburgh, M.D., Richard Rupp, DPM, David Sato, M.D. and Kin Wong, M.D. Recognized for 20 years of service were Sam Carvajal, M.D. and Lazik Der Sarkissian, M.D.

All the recipients received a personalized Montblanc pen, an Amazon gift card and a certificate of appreciation.

Everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time in the elegant and traditional surroundings of this beautiful golf club that is also known for its superb cuisine, as evidenced that night.
