Glendale Chapter of National Charity League hosts another successful Sellebration

Sellebration, the annual community rummage sale staged by the Glendale Chapter of National Charity League, Inc. was held Sept. 24 at the Pacific Community Center in Glendale.

“Sellebration is one of the highlights of the Chapter year for our members,” said Pati Patao, president of the group, in a news release. “It demonstrates our mission to foster mother-daughter relationships as we all work together to support the community and our philanthropy partners, which include Union Station, Ascencia, YWCA Glendale, Door of Hope and many more. It brings all of our members together for fun and service.”

Chairing the event this year were members Aurezue Enright, Erika Rodriguez and Christine Cassin. More than 200 mothers and daughters spent 1,445 hours planning, preparing, setting up and working at Sellebration.

The chapter’s membership drive is underway and applications are being accepted for the Classes of 2023, 2022 and 2021 from the La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta and Glendale communities. Those interested should visit nclglendale.org and complete the online interest form on the “Get Involved” page.

Author of ‘365 Thank Yous’ among those featured during Book and Author Luncheon

Angeles National Golf Club will again be the venue when the La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild holds the annual Book and Author Luncheon on Oct. 25, to benefit Orthopaedic Institute for Children.

This year’s speaker is 10-year-old As’ad Kashim, who was born in Nigeria with cerebral palsy and came with his family on a “journey of faith” to the U.S., where he was treated at the Orthopaedic Institute.

One of the event’s featured authors is John Kralik, a native of Ohio who, at 53, had the epiphany that if he could learn to focus on what he had in his life to be grateful for, his life would be more tolerable. His memoir, “365 Thank Yous” was the result. Today, Kralik is a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.

Author and illustrator Frans Vischer is returning to the Book and Author Luncheon having spoken in 2014. He’ll catch guests up on the adventures of “Fuddles,” the 16-pound pampered fat cat. Two of Vischer’s books will be sold at the luncheon.

The Book and Author Luncheon is by invitation. To be included on the list, contact Joan Cleven at (818) 249-4603 or Marianne Jennings at (818) 249-5443 and request an invitation.

Thursday Club to hold meeting on Oct. 25

Mothers of daughters who are currently high school sophomores or freshmen and who might be interested in the Les Fleurettes debutante program are invited to attend an informational meeting planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Thursday Club clubhouse, 4440 Woodleigh Lane.

This is a “mothers only” meeting to explain the requirements for Thursday Club membership and to answer questions about the debutante program.

The 16-month program starts in the girls’ junior year of high school. Each participant must complete 10 hours each of community service, charitable activities and cultural experience. Personal development instructions given at monthly meetings include modern etiquette, personal correspondence, public speaking, makeup application, social media etiquette and personal safety for women, among other lessons.

The program is capped by the annual Bal Blanc de Noel, an event held at the end of each December that has been organized by the Thursday Club since 1952.

Light refreshments will be served at the Oct. 25 informational meeting. For more information, or to make a reservation to attend, email Kim Ortiz at thebartines@aol.com.
