The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada-AM, in collaboration with the Montrose American Legion Post 288 and the Dream Catchers Kiwanis Club of Payson, Ariz., is offering to place American flags at homes and businesses on four holidays each year for a requested annual donation of $100.

The 5-foot-by-3-foot flags are on poles that are 8 feet tall. The holidays included in the fundraising program are Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day. Proceeds raised will go toward assisting veterans.

Two local teachers honored

Two La Cañada Unified School District teachers last week were given 2015-16 Rose Harrington Educator of the Year awards, which this year included a $6,625 cash prize to each recipient.

Karen Gilmour, a second-grade teacher at La Cañada Elementary School, and La Cañada High English teacher Justin Valassidis were feted at a special gathering on May 26.

Established 14 years ago by a bequest to the La Canada Flintridge Educational Foundation Endowment Fund from the estate of local resident and teacher Rose Harrington, the award acknowledges outstanding educators who have been selected by a committee.

The public is invited to take part in the nominating process for the Harrington awards each year. To learn more about the program visit lcfef.org/Rose-Harrington-Award.
