Share

Local Kiwanian Bill Maddigan, who donates more than 25 hours of his time weekly to the organization Brother Helpers, was recently presented the Distinguished Community Service Award by the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada-AM.

The club, which meets Wednesday mornings at Lutheran Church in the Foothills, made the presentation during a special visit from Cherice Gilliam, governor of Division 3 of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of Kiwanis International.

In his work with Brothers Helpers, Maddigan purchases and supplies items necessary to area agencies to prepare more than 1,200 meals a week for people in need. The packaged meals are then taken to Our Lady Queen of Angels/La Placita Church in downtown Los Angeles.

Club offers free vision tests at local preschools

Members of the La Cañada Junior Women’s Club will visit five local preschools during the next couple of weeks, to screen children between the ages of 3 to 5 years old for vision problems. More than 200 local children will be tested during visits to St. George’s Preschool, Parents and Children’s Nursery School, Lighted Window Preschool, La Cañada Flintridge Community Center Preschool and Crescenta-Cañada Cooperative Nursery School.

“Early detection is very important,” Co-Chairwoman Stephanie Ryan said in a statement. “During one of these preschool screenings a few years ago, I was alerted that my son, Lincoln, had trouble seeing out of one eye.”

Ryan’s son was later diagnosed with amblyopia, which affects up to 3% of the general population. He received treatment and his vision has completely recovered. Ryan said she appreciated having learned of her son’s vision issue through for the LC Junior Women’s screening program, which has been offered by the organization for several years.

For more information about the vision screening, call Stephanie Ryan at (323) 371-1446 or Kyle Grimes at (818) 207-4497.
