La Cañada students draw their idea of ‘Thanksgiving in America’
A 66-year-old Valley Sun tradition, that of inviting La Cañada fifth-grade students to participate in an art contest under the general theme “Thanksgiving in America,” drew 150 colorful entries this year.
The contest is limited to the fifth grade, a time when youngsters are studying the first Thanksgiving in the New World. Participating students this year represented all three public elementary schools — Paradise Canyon, La Cañada and Palm Crest — as well as two private schools in the city, St. Bede and Crestview Preparatory School.

Capturing the top award this year for general excellence was Annabelle Fung, a student in Camilla Hartman’s class at Palm Crest Elementary. The 10-year-old used colored markers to create her well-conceived artwork, which features a U.S. flag outlining all 50 of the United States, with a Native American girl and a Pilgrim boy flanking a turkey inscribed with words that describe the holiday.
Congratulations to Annabelle, as well as to all the runners-up! Enjoy viewing their work on pages A6-7.
