Quick Hits: Superintendent notes enrollment uptick

On Tuesday, La Cañada Unified Supt. Wendy Sinnette updated the school board on the status of the district’s estimated enrollment for the 2016-17 school year and the number of permit applications accepted to allow children outside district boundaries to attend La Cañada schools.

So far, the district projects a total enrollment of 4,157 students, compared to 4,008 at the end of the previous school year. This year, LCUSD processed 295 permit applications.

Among those applications, 71 came from students living in the city’s western Sagebrush area. A total of 130 children applied under the Allen Bill, meaning their parents work inside district boundaries but do not live there, while an additional 34 applications came for the siblings of Allen Bill students.

Another 32 came in from the children of school district employees, the superintendent said.

Sinnette noted that the numbers are likely to change in the last few weeks before the start of school on Aug. 16, but said they seemed to indicate a slight upward trend in an era when flat attendance rates were anticipated.

“We’ve seen an uptick that will really help the revenue side of the house,” she said.

Current estimated enrollments for the district’s five schools are: La Cañada Elementary, 662 students; Paradise Canyon Elementary, 722 students; Palm Crest Elementary, 621; La Cañada High School 7/8, 709 students; and LCHS 9-12, 1,399 students.

Pet adoption event lowers fees

The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is participating in the second annual “Clear the Shelters” campaign to adopt out as many pets as possible this Saturday, July 23.

During the event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the adoption fee for all animals will be reduced to $20.

Last year, 57 animals who had been sheltered at the Pasadena facility were adopted during the same campaign. More than 50 Southland animal shelters and rescue groups are also scheduled to participate in the event, spearheaded by NBC4 Southern California and Telemundo 52 in Los Angeles.

The Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is located at 361 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena. Regular adoption policies and screening apply. It is suggested that people looking to adopt a pet on Saturday download and print an adoption application found at pasadenahumane.org/adopt in advance so as to expedite the process. Renters must show proof they are allowed to keep a pet in their homes.
