Flintridge Prep celebrates homecoming on its own field

Share

With its return to eight-man football this year, Flintridge Preparatory School was able to enjoy its homecoming celebration last Friday on its own field, something that was not possible after it joined the Prep League in 1996 and fielded 11-man teams for 21 seasons.

Prep’s first homecoming at its Crown Avenue campus began with a pep rally that honored all the fall teams. School officials report that in what has become a tradition since 2009, the school community paid special homage in the pep rally to Coach Tom Fry, who passed away just before homecoming that year. Fry was one of four individuals recognized as the school, led by Headmaster Peter Bachmann, dedicated its Memorial Field.

Following the pep rally, the junior and senior girls played a powder puff football game. The JV football team played a lopsided game against Bell-Jeff, with the latter claiming a victory.

Seniors on the football and cheer squads were recognized at their last home game of the season, which turned out to be a 39-36 win for the Rebels, who were playing rival Chadwick. Also spotlighted was this year’s homecoming court. Reunions for the classes of 1966 through 68 coincided with the Friday’s celebrations.

Of special note, according to school officials, was the attendance at Friday night’s game by Spencer Murray V, Prep Class of ‘66, with his father, La Cañada resident Spencer Murray IV, Prep Class of ’44. The younger Murray was the first graduate of the school whose father was an alumnus.
