Fifth-grader presides over La Cañada Elementary as ‘Principal for a Day’

Returning to the La Cañada Elementary School campus on Tuesday after a three-day holiday weekend may have been a grind for most, but for fifth-grader Michael Kwan it was time to shine.

That’s because for one day only, the 10-year-old got to rule the school as LCE’s “Principal for a Day.” The titular distinction is bestowed annually on the student whose family bids the highest for the honor at the school’s Halloween Haunt PTA fundraiser in October, according to school secretary Jenny Lee.

“He spent some of the day in classes, and some of the day out on campus,” Lee said of Kwan, who made the rounds Tuesday alongside regular Principal Emily Blaney. “They were out at recess together, they greeted the carline — he even got to update the website with the principal.”

A quick online visit to the school website, lcelions.net, confirms Kwan’s packed schedule, which included delivering in-person announcements to upper grades that morning recess would be extended by five minutes and doling out “Way to B!” conduct awards to well-behaved third-graders.

“When I was done, I had recess with my friends,” Kwan detailed in his online report. “After recess ended, I updated the school website, and I also did some office work.”

Other executive actions included adjusting a staff meeting agenda, recording a Web video message and deciding whether classes who’d won Pride Points awards should be honored with store-bought or home-made popsicles. (Principal Kwan opted for home-made, Blaney reported later that day.)
