Climate Action Plan adopted by La Cañada Flintridge City Council

Members of the La Cañada Flintridge City Council officially adopted Tuesday a citywide Climate Action Plan aimed at reducing locally generated greenhouse gas emissions.

Drafted with input from residents and community groups and finalized by the Planning Commission, the plan introduces measures that could lower La Cañada emissions in categories ranging from energy and water to transportation and solid waste.

While the city is on track to meet greenhouse gas cuts set by the state for 2020, more will have to be done to meet stricter benchmarks in 2035, consultant Christina McAdams told the council.

An implementation tool will help city staff maintain progress the document’s goals. In a public hearing Tuesday, student Leila Thompsky urged council members to adopt the plan.

“Kids movies today include a lot of animal characters, like lions, tigers, lemurs and all sorts of tropical fish. However, kids movies in the future may only have mosquitoes, pigeons and roaches because that’s all that may be left,” Thompsky said, citing extinction predictions for the next century. “I would like you to please consider approving the Climate Action Plan so that I can someday in 20 years see ‘Finding Dory’s Granddaughter.’”
