Residents living on the 4500 block of Alta Canyada Road were alerted Sunday evening by heavy smoke issuing from what the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported was a home kitchen fire that started just before 6 p.m. that day.

In a report to members of the La Cañada Flintridge City Council Tuesday, Battalion Chief Carl Flores said a man was home alone with the family pet attempting to cook a meal when he noticed the oven was smoking.

“He went outside to get the garden hose, and by the time he got back fire had gone up the wall, up to the ceiling,” Flores said. “It burnt the whole kitchen, burnt the attic plus a little loft he had up there.”

Crews responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. Although no injuries were reported, the fire caused an estimated $100,000 in structural damage and another $50,000 in estimated property loss, a spokeswoman for the fire department confirmed Tuesday.

The battalion chief urged residents to keep a fire extinguisher near their kitchens for safety.

“It’s something he learned the hard way,” Flores said of the Alta Canyada homeowner.
