La Cañada Flintridge has been named among California’s “Safest Cities,” ranking 18th for low incidence of violence and property crimes in a 2016 report issued by public records database company BackgroundChecks.org.

To determine cities’ ranking, BackgroundChecks.org used FBI violent crime statistics and its own proprietary research data and presented information regarding the incidence of violent and property crimes per 100,000 people in the “Safest Cities in California Report for 2016,” according to a release issued by the company Tuesday.

Overall, the state of California averaged 402 incidents of violent crime per 100,000 people and 2,658 property crimes. By comparison, La Cañada had much lower rates.

“La Cañada Flintridge is a Los Angeles County city that sits at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains,” reads the city’s entry on BackgroundChecks.org’s report. “This town of 20,200 residents is home to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has some of the top-ranked schools in the state. Living here is a safe choice as well, with a violent crime rate of 58.3 and the chance of being affected by property crime in the city just 1.5%.”

The report’s top ranked city was Hillsborough, a wealthy San Francisco Bay area town, where the violent crime rate was nine per 100,000.
