Around Town: Check out these LCF takeout spots

Share

It’s Friday night in La Cañada. Your stomach rumbles, but you’re too lazy to cook. You drive up and down Foothill Boulevard, looking for a parking spot, glimpsing the lines waiting outside. School’s back in session, and all the restaurants are packed.

That’s when you decide that Friday is a good night to go home, put on pajamas and dig into classy takeout food. (Classy means food that doesn’t come from McDonald’s.)

So, you pull out your iPhone and turn to the La Cañada Valley Sun’s Around Town’s top eight mobile-optimized Foothill Boulevard takeout possibilities.

1. There are new menus at Min’s Kitchen, La Cañada’s go to spot for fine Thai cuisine. We were surprised to learn that the kitchen in Min’s Kitchen is much larger than the dining area. Min’s food is made to order, and the efficient back-of-the-house operation allows for an amazing takeout operation, now made easier by a professionally designed online menu at minskitchen.net. There’s also a vegetarian menu available. Min’s Kitchen, 1040 Foothill Blvd., (818) 790-6074.

2. Only the Flintridge Proper would give away their cocktail recipes online at theproper.com. Now, that’s Chutzpah! The owners, Brady and Mary Elizabeth Caverly, know that Johnny Law doesn’t want you driving home carrying a takeout “Switzer Campfire.” Before you phone in your order, check out the dinner menu at theproper.com/proper-dinner. When you get home, make a house cocktail or Shirley Temple from a recipe at theproper.com/the-proper-bar/house-cocktails. The Flintridge Proper, 464 Foothill Blvd., (818) 790-4888.

3. Los Gringos Locos has served more than 1 million tacos to loyal La Cañadans. There’s even a late-night menu, served on Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to midnight. Just make a call to their catering hotline at (818) 248-5910. The menus are online at losgringoslocos.com. Los Gringos Locos, 631 Foothill Blvd., (818) 790-2696.

4. Taylor’s Steak House does do take out, but you can also make an online reservation at taylorssteakhouse.com/Taylors-LC.html. Friday-night specials include short ribs and grilled Chilean sea bass. Taylor’s Steak House, 901 Foothill Blvd., (818) 790-7668.

5. You can order online or by phone at Hello Pizza, home of the famous Kimchi Pizza, with or without the gluten-free crust. There are amazing vegetarian and traditional options, daily specials and appetizers. They also deliver. Hello Pizza, 2261 Foothill Blvd., (818) 957-7979, hellopizzastory.com.

6. Half the fun of dining at Sakura is actually going there, but if the siren call of your sofa demands takeout, then check out the menu at sakurasteakhouse.com and call in your order at (818) 790-1013. Sakura Steakhouse, 985 Foothill Blvd., (818) 790-1013.

7. Georgee’s Pizza also serves spaghetti and fried chicken. Check out the menu at georgeespizza.com/menu.pdf. Call in your order for pick up or delivery. Georgee’s Pizza, 720 Foothill Blvd., (818) 790-0637.

If none of these work, you can avoid the crowds and go off Foothill, with plenty of parking at the movie theater, to Café Sole, where Salvatore Attanasio bakes fresh bread every morning. Café Sole, 1929 Verdugo Blvd., (818) 790-6062. Or head to Seoul BBQ in the shopping center at 2139 Foothill Blvd., (818) 248-9958. Both restaurants do takeout.

Speaking of Friday nights, as I mentioned in my column last week, La Cañada High School football season is underway. I wrote about the recent incident between a Salesian High player who allegedly smeared a sports-cream heat rub onto the face of a La Cañada player after a tackle. I was critical of the way the incident became so unnecessarily public and questioned, among other things, the judgment of LCHS Principal Ian McFeat who made available to media outlets a video of the incident. Since my column was published, I’ve reached out to McFeat, Salesian Principal Alex Chacon and CIF officials for more information on how the incident was treated, as I believe it should have been handled more privately. Only LCHS Principal McFeat replied to my inquiries, and he stated that he sent the video to Salesian’s principal Chacon and to the CIF before releasing it to the public.
