Letter: Disconcerting near miss near schools

Share

Last Thursday night a woman was struck by a car as she was crossing the street from St. Bede’s School to St. Francis High School for a meeting or event.

The driver of the vehicle reportedly paused for a moment and then left. The woman was transported to the hospital for head injuries she sustained.

I think we can all agree that this is horrible, and this poor woman could have been killed. It could have been our child or family member killed, but thankfully it wasn’t.

None of us should not be in so much of a hurry that we disregard traffic laws and other people’s safety.

We all know that residents speed around town, don’t stop for stop signs or pedestrians at crosswalks, double park and pull illegal U-turns in front of schools.

Basically, most traffic laws are broken on a daily basis and we don’t have (retired) Deputy Jim Smith here to write tickets anymore. When he was in town, most people knew better, and if they didn’t they usually ended up getting tickets.

Are people in that much of a hurry that someone else’s personal safety doesn’t matter to them? I am sure most of these offenders are really nice people, but as soon as they get behind the wheel of their car their personalities just go out the window.

Please think about others and slow down. We don’t want anyone to get hurt. Thank you.
