Letter: Lively and dry at the Community Center

Share

Most probably can’t remember a fierce storm that came into town July 2015, but the Community Center won’t forget.

We got flooded throughout our entire facility from the constant downpours that included lightning and thunder. We had to utilize a professional company to remove most of the water. The worst damage we sustained was to our main room. The floor began to show lifting right away from the laminate. We had to use fans for about a week to help dry out the area.

As we are the Community Center that many people rely on, we kept moving forward with our day-to-day operations. Everyone was very cooperative with hopes someday soon we would get the floor repaired. Programs and events continued.

Then, on Dec. 1, during a social media campaign known as “Giving Tuesday,” we jumped into action with hopes to raise some of the $15,000 that it would take to replace the flooring. We are so appreciative to all those who donated to the Community Center for our cause. This gave us the jump-start we needed to get the new floor in. In three days’ time, the old floor got removed and a new floor was installed. All of our users are ecstatic and just loving the new floor. Not only is the floor beautiful, but waterproof.

More than 25 programs are active inside our main room throughout the week for hours at a time. These range from our senior ballroom dancers to preschool ballet, from Music Together to Parent and Me classes, Kumdo to Jazzercise, Hula to jump roping, and drama to salsa, to name just a few. It is our hope this floor will last for many years to come so the next generation can experience programs and events at the Community Center, which has been touching lives for the past 67 years.
