Letter: There’s another source for free mulch

Share

In case you can’t make it to Descanso Gardens free mulch giveaway on Oct. 3, there is still hope. For the past several years I’ve been taking advantage of the city of Los Angeles’ Free Mulch Give-Away program. The city’s bureau of sanitation provides free quality mulch in 11 different locations throughout the city that are open to the public. I use the Lopez Canyon facility, which is conveniently located just off I-210 at Paxton Street.

You have a choice of two grades of mulch (depending on the length of time it’s been composted, they also offer commercial-grade compost). You need to bring your own shovel, bags, trash cans, or pickup truck. Load up your own containers and take as much as you need. If any locations run out of mulch, or you want to know the delivery schedule, call the Lopez Canyon Environmental Center at (818) 485-0703.

Patrons range from professional landscapers with pick-up trucks and flat bed trailers, to senior ladies with hand trowels and kitchen trash bags. For more information, log onto lacitysan.org/srpcd/mulch_giveaway.htm.
