Mailbag: Policing should come first

Share

Re: “Enlisting cameras to fight crime,” Oct. 20. The automatic license plate reader (ALPR) system will not deter anything until the following happens:

1. The city of La Cañada Flintridge encourages proactive policing! The city manager and staff discourage actual police work. They don’t want to upset the rich residents of our city.

2. Proactive policing! When was the last time you saw a deputy on the residential streets? I actually had an incident in front of our residence on the Sunday of the last Music in the Park concert. When I contacted the sergeant who was the acting watch commander that night, he stated, “Your son says there is some kind music event in the park.” This sergeant, who is supposed to know what goes on in the city of La Cañada Flintridge, had no clue about Music in the Park! I’m sure readers know, but Music in the Park goes from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. It takes place every Sunday during the summer months.

The above is just one example of the lack of knowledge of the sheriff’s personnel assigned to the city of La Cañada Flintridge!

I’ve worked with ALPRs. It is an amazing system, but the city of La Cañada Flintridge and the Sheriff’s Department have to be proactive! Neither of them are at this time!

Honesty appreciation

I just want to let you know I’m enjoying Elaine La Marr’s series of essays on her breast cancer experience. I love her honest voice in these pieces. Thank you.

An endorsement of Portantino

Some decisions are easy. The choice for the 25th Senate District is one of them. Anyone who stopped by LCE over the weekend to support the Halloween Haunt, attended the recent Foundation Wine Auction, enjoyed the Boosterfest or has been on an AYSO soccer field recently knows why. Our own Anthony Portantino was there and active in helping our community and our schools as emcee, referee and active school parent. As the president of the La Cañada Unified School District Board of Education I am very pleased to endorse Anthony and to encourage my friends and neighbors to cast their vote for him.

Anthony represented our community well when he was in the Assembly, always putting children first. He and Ellen are extremely active and knowledgeable about our local issues. Please join me in supporting him for state Senate.
