Sports Roundup: Flintridge Sacred Heart volleyball downs La Cañada for CV tourney title

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart, La Cañada at Crescenta Valley Tournament: The two-day Crescenta Valley Tournament featured four area squads and finished with a city rivalry championship match.

Flintridge Sacred Heart won its second tournament in as many weekends and exacted some revenge in defeating La Cañada, 25-22, 25-21, in the title match.

The Tologs improved to 19-13 while junior opposite Megan Lund was named tournament most valuable player after finishing with 38 kills and 26 digs combined in victories over Alta Loma (2-1), Eagle Rock (2-0), Hoover (2-0) and La Cañada.

Cate Doug, Maddie Pernecky (30 digs) and Skylar Bowyer (19 kills) were named to the all-tournament team. Emily Smith added 31 kills for the Tologs, who avenged a 3-2 loss to La Cañada on Oct. 7.

Second-place La Cañada (19-6) finished a 4-1 run with victories over Taft (2-0), Maranatha (2-0), Arcadia (2-1) and Alta Loma (2-0).

Sophomore outside hitter Emily Weirick totaled 43 kills for the Spartans, while senior outside hitter Chloe Kerstein tallied 42 kills, senior libero Elizabeth Gannon contributed 51 assists and senior Hailey Belcher added 105 digs.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

La Cañada at Riverside Invitational: The Spartans had three top-20 performances on Saturday in the three-mile run, led by standout Kayley Bond, who finished third in 17 minutes 42.2 seconds.

The race was won by JW North’s Makayla Browne in 17:34.3 with the team victory going to Murrieta Valley with 98 points. The Spartans, with only five runners, finished fifth with 193 points.

Sarah Auther was 15th in 19:01.2 and Katie Scoville continued her road back to prominence with a 19th-place mark of 19:15.3.
