Baffert claims second consecutive Travers

La Cañada Flintridge resident Bob Baffert claimed his second victory in as many years at Saturday’s Grade I $1.25-million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course at Saratoga Springs, New York.

Baffert’s 3-year-old colt West Coast picked up the 3 1/4-length victory over Gunnevera at the 1 1/4-mile dirt course. West Coast was ridden by jockey Mike Smith.

Last season, Smith and Baffert teamed up for a victory at Travers with Arrogate, Baffert’s winningest horse of all-time. The victory is Baffert’s third, having won his first title in 2001 with Point Given and jockey Gary Stevens.

The victory also marks the second consecutive big weekend for Baffert, who found himself at the winner’s circle on Aug. 19. Baffert’s horse Collected upset Arrogate, ridden by Smith, at the Grade I $1 million TVG Pacific Classic at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club race track.
