Morikawa named state’s top amateur

La Cañada High graduate Collin Morikawa, a four-time All-Area Boys’ Golfer of the Year, was tabbed AmateurGolf.com California Player of the Year for the second straight year.

The accolade is awarded based on a point system earned through performance in major national and state amateur events throughout the year. Morikawa, who attends the University of California, topped Shintaro Ban of San Jose. Morikawa finished with 7,450 points and Ban accumulated 7,335.

Morikawa won the Northeast Amateur Tournament and the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational. He took second in three other events.

Morikawa made it to the round of 16 at the United States Amateur Championship and was selected to represent Team USA at the Walker Cup, which the United States won against Ireland.

LCF’s Jefferies places third at Kittredge Cup

La Cañada Flintridge resident Dylan Jeffries had an eventful winter break.

The Paradise Canyon Elementary sixth-grader took third place at the Kittredge Cup ski race tournament, which concluded Dec. 30 at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes.

Jeffries posted a two-race average time of 48.37 seconds in the 12-and-under boys’ competition.

Jeffries earned the 23rd-best time overall of all 106 competitor across all age groups from U10 to U14.

All top-three finishers from each age group received a trophy.
