Historic run continues for La Cañada girls’ wrestling program

One sister continued her pioneering trail, the other called it a season for the La Cañada High girls’ wrestling program on Friday.

Spartans 170-pound junior Sophie Garcia went undefeated through the first day of action at the CIF Southern Section Girls’ Wrestling Championships at Eastvale Eleanor Roosevelt High and became her school’s first-ever state qualifier while older sister Cheyenne Garcia was eliminated.

“I’m very proud of her and all her hard work to get there,” La Cañada coach Justin Luthey texted in regards to Sophie Garcia. “She’s been extremely driven all summer, preseason and season with this in mind. Lots of credit goes to coach Alex Bache, as well.”

Sophie Garcia finished 3-0, tallied a pair of pins, earned advancement to the division semifinals and punched her ticket to the CIF State Girls’ Invitational Wrestling Championship tournament in Visalia, beginning Feb. 23.

The junior opened with a fall in 5 minutes, 39 seconds against Beckman’s Tya Gray and followed that with a pin over Hacienda Heights Wilson’s Melanie Aguilar in 4:32.

A showdown with top-seeded Jessica Gutierrez of Martin Luther King High in the quarterfinals fizzled out due to an injury default victory for Garcia.

Up next for Sophie Garcia is a match-up with third-seeded Kiri Schell of Murrieta Valley in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Sophie Garcia’s three victories gained Friday matched her combined win total from the last two CIF runs as she was 3-4.

If there was bad news for Sophie Garcia, it’s that her sister won’t be competing in Saturday’s final day.

La Cañada senior 189-pounder Cheyenne Garcia capped her season with a 2-2 run.

Garcia commenced with a pin of Tustin’s Sarah Lucero in the first round, but was pinned by top-seeded Sierra Adams Gregory of Long Beach Millikan in 21 seconds in the second round.

Cheyenne Garcia was dropped into the consolation round and bounced back with a 5-0 win over Moreno Valley’s Rosalia Casas.

In the final match to earn a spot to Saturday, Northview’s Dejia Grijalva defeated Garcia, 5-1.

The two victories for Cheyenne Garcia marked a personal best.
