Sports Roundup: La Cañada, Flintridge Prep golf wrapping up league success

BOYS’ GOLF

La Cañada 223, Monrovia 265: The Spartans clinched the Rio Hondo League championship outright Tuesday at La Cañada Country Club. They have won 13 straight league crowns.

John Hickman had four birdies to shoot a one-under-par 33 for the Spartans (9-0, 7-0 in league).

“It feels good to win it outright,” La Cañada first-year Coach Derrick Williams said. “It was one of our goals in the beginning of the year and it’s good to get that accomplished.”

Flintridge Prep in Prep League individual prelims: The Rebels had four players advance in Tuesday’s event at Brookside Golf Course 2 in Pasadena.

Ben Sacks carded a nine-over-par 79 and is sixth in the 17-player competition. The Rebels also advanced Matthew Choi (88, 12th), Cameron Wu (89, 13th) and Brendan Barton (90, 14th) to Thursday’s league finals at Brookside Golf Course No. 1. The cut from Tuesday was 91. The top four finishers advance to the playoffs in May.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

St. Francis 77, Chaminade 49: The Golden Knights picked improved to .500 in the Mission League finale at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Matthew Molina won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches and the triple jump (41-6) for St. Francis (3-3), while junior Blake Howard captured the shot put (48-4) and pole vault (11-6).

Freshman Nick Cesta won the long jump (22 feet), while junior Taylor Bosveld clinched the 200-meter run (23.51 seconds) and freshman Stuart Serventi claimed the 1,600 (4:47.64).

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Marymount 75, Flintridge Sacred Heart 50: The Tologs came up short in a Mission League home meet on Wednesday afternoon.

Lauren Bolte won the 200-meter dash in 26.87 seconds for Flintridge Sacred Heart (0-4) and was a member of the winning 1,600-meter run (4:34.24) along with Natalia Cruz, Catherine Sullivan and Jillian Willis.

As for Willis, she earlier won the 300-meter hurdles in 51.58, while sophomore Kelly Carney won the triple jump in 33-10.

BASEBALL

Flintridge Prep 4, St. Monica Academy 2: Flintridge Prep (12-5-1) picked up a nonleague win Wednesday at Scholl Canyon Ball Fields. Flintridge Prep pitcher Jeff Chan tossed a complete game, striking out six.

Alemany 3, St. Francis 1: Aaron Treloar and Niko Khoury had the Golden Knights’ only hits in Wednesday’s Mission League loss on the road.

St. Francis (6-16, 3-8 in league) had five walks and two hit batsmen and scored its run in the seventh inning when Nolan Schwery came around on an error.

SOFTBALL

Chaminade 10, Flintridge Sacred Heart 6: The Tologs lost a Mission League road contest on Wednesday afternoon. With the defeat, the Tologs dropped to 11-5 and 0-4 in league.

On Tuesday, Sacred Heart suffered a 12-1 league loss in six innings to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.

BOYS’ TENNIS

La Cañada 16, South Pasadena 2: The visiting Spartans picked up a Rio Hondo League win Wednesday. The Spartans are 11-3, 6-2 in league.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Chaminade 18, St. Francis 8: The Golden Knights lost in Mission League competition Tuesday. St. Francis dropped to 6-11, 1-8 in league.
