Sports Roundup: St. Francis tennis’ Freers turn in Ojai semifinal run

BOYS’ TENNIS

St. Francis, La Canada at Ojai Valley Tournament: The Golden Knights’ John and Ian Freer turned in a stellar showing at the prestigous Ojai Valley CIF Doubles Tournament, concluding their run Saturday with a semifinal defeat against top-seeded Connor Lee and Bryce Pereira of San Marino, 6-2, 7-6(2).

Lee and Pereira went on to win the championship.

In Thursday’s opener, the Freers beat Nordhoff High’s Mikel Elizalde and Dakota Martin, 6-1, 6-3, before returning that day for a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Glendora’s Tommy Folsom and Justin Lay.

On Friday, the Golden Knights swept Hans Hwang and Soomin Lee of University, 6-4, 6-4, and then returned for a quarterfinal win against La Costa Canyon’s Mitchell Davis and Ryan Dehmoubed, 7-6(2), 6-1.

Elsewhere in the tournament, La Cañada’s Lucas Chmielewski and Phillip Lan advanced to Friday’s round of 32 where they lost to Jed Kronenberg and Adam Sraberg, 6-2, 6-1.

The Spartans duo started with a 6-3, 6-4 sweep of San Clemente’s Corey Angeli and Christopher Torcaso ahead of a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Clark Easterman and William Olson of Bishops.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Ojai Valley Junior Tournament: La Cañada Flintridge’s Tsehay Driscoll, the No. 5 seed in the Ojai Junior Girls’ 14 Singles Tournament, advanced all the way to Saturday morning’s G14 semifinal.

Driscoll succumbed to fourth-seeded Kenadee Semenik of Las Vegas, 6-3, 6-2.

Driscoll began the tournament on Thursday with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over Granada Hills’ Liza Tankimovich. Later on Thursday, she defeated Encinitas’ Isabella Foshee, 6-3, 6-3. On Friday, Driscoll bested Santa Monica’s Erica Ekstrand, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, before defeating ninth-seeded Phoebe Peus, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

La Cañada at Bonita Diving Invitational: Freshman Tatsuya Macida claimed a title at the event on Saturday afternoon at Bonita High.

The Spartans diver finished with 485.95 points in the springboard to win the event well ahead of Capistrano Valley’s David Llano (386.90)

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

La Cañada at Bonita Diving Invitational: Senior Sydney Okland turned in a fine effort at Saturday afternoon’s competition to take second at Bonita High.

Okland tallied 431.50 points through 11 events in the springboard and was just nipped by Bonita’s Rebecca Walker (431.80).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Prep in Crescenta Valley Tournament: The Rebels posted a 4-2 record through the two-day tournament and finished sixth in the Gold Division.

Flintridge Prep (20-6) dropped its first bracket contest, 25-20, 25-16 to Eagle Rock on Saturday morning. The Rebels recovered to defeat Anaheim Canyon, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12, to advance to the fifth-place match where Flintridge Prep lost to Taft, 25-23, 25-23.

Flintridge Prep started off strong Friday by going 3-0 and winning pool D.

The Rebels topped Taft (19-25, 25-20, 15-9), Burbank (23-25, 25-20, 15-9) and Palmdale Aero (26-24, 25-19) to earn the top spot.

La Cañada in Crescenta Valley Tournament: The Spartans finished 2-4 in the two-day tournament and just came up a match short of taking third place in the Silver Division.

La Cañada (5-16) commenced bracket play Saturday with a 25-8, 25-15 victory over Palmdale Aero, which sent the squad to the semifinals.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, they were topped by Damien (25-21, 25-14) and then by Paraclete in the third-place match (27-25, 25-14).

La Cañada kicked off tournament play Friday with a 1-2 run in pool play C action, which placed the squad third in the pool.

The Spartans posted a 25-19, 25-19 victory over San Marcos after dropping contests to Eagle Rock (25-16, 27-25) and Anaheim Canyon (25-11, 25-10).

SOFTBALL

Eagle Rock 11, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: The Tologs lost Saturday afternoon in nonleague play.

FSHA fell to 11-6.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Glendale 9, St. Francis 8: The local schools concluded the regular season with a thriller won by the Nitros at home on Saturday night.

Glendale’s record improved to 9-6, while St. Francis fell to 6-13.
