Sports Roundup: La Cañada girls’ volleyball jumps above .500

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Cañada 3, Immaculate Heart 1: The host Spartans peaked above .500 for the first time this season after picking up a nonleague victory, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14 on Tuesday afternoon.

La Cañada improved to 4-3 behind 11 kills, eight digs and eight aces from Chloe Kerstein and nine kills and seven aces from Emily Weirick. Claire Kevorkian added six kills and five blocks, while Hailey Belcher chipped in 24 assists, Elizabeth Gannon tallied 14 digs and Erica Oh contributed five aces.

La Cañada in Molten Classic: Facing good competition, the Spartans finished 2-2 in Molten Classic Tournament on Thursday, Saturday and Monday.

La Cañada notched a 25-12, 25-17, 25-18 victory over South Torrance on Monday. On Saturday, the Spartans split a pair. The squad first defeated Pioneer, 25-11, 25-10, 25-12, before losing to St. Joseph’s 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-14. The Spartans opened the tournament with a thrilling 26-24, 13-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-10 loss to West Torrance.

Kerstein finished with 41 kills through four matches, while Belcher added 121 assists and 12 aces.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

St. Francis 10, Milken Community 6: St. Francis began its season Tuesday with a nonleague road win. The Golden Knights got four goals from Greg Camacho and three from Robert Alietti.
