Sports Roundup: La Cañada girls’ tennis, volleyball notch huge league wins

GIRLS’ TENNIS

La Cañada 9, Temple City 9 (La Cañada wins on games, 77-69): The Spartans rallied late in their Rio Hondo League home match and are in second place in league following Thursday’s league victory.

The Spartans (5-5, 4-1 in league) tied it at 9 following a 6-3 doubles win from Ashley Chun and Solenn Matuska. Megan Galantei of La Cañada posted a 6-1 victory to pull the Spartans to within 9-8.

“We beat them, 10-8, the first time we played them,” La Cañada coach Will Moravec said. “We had to come all the way back at the very end today because they had somoked us in doubles. However, we won most of our sets by big margins.”

The Spartans got three singles wins from Sophie McKenzie (6-2, 6-0, 6-0) and two from Annabelle Kevakian (6-0, 6-1). They also got two wins in doubles from Elisa Wu and Artis Phillips (6-4, 6-4).

Immaculate Heart 11, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 7: The Tologs dropped a Mission League home match Thursday at Scholl Canyon Tennis Center.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

La Cañada 3, Monrovia 1: A drive to a Rio Hondo League championship continued Thursday afternoon for the Spartans who defeated the defending champions at home, 29-27, 25-14, 20-25, 25-17.

Senior Chloe Kerstein led the Spartans (13-4, 6-1 in league) with 15 kills and 12 digs, while Emily Weirick added 12 kills and 18 digs and Claire Kevorkian chipped in 10 kills. Emily Gannon contributed 25 digs and five aces and Hailey Belcher finished with 47 assists for La Cañada, which swept the season series with Monrovia.

The Spartans are a match ahead of Monrovia (5-2) and San Marino (5-2) with three matches left.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, Louisville 2: After starting the Mission League season with five straight losses, the Tologs have rebounded with consecutive victories, including on Thursday, 17-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11.

Megan Lund led the way with 18 kills and 10 digs, while Julia Powers contributed 10 kills for Flintridge Sacred Heart (7-12, 2-5 in league). Cate Doud added 45 assists and six aces, while Maddie Pernecky finished with 16 digs. The contest marked the return of injured outside hitter Ellis DeJardin, an All-Area first-team pick last season, who totaled five digs.

Pasadena Poly 3, Flintridge Prep 0: Host Flintridge Prep fell, 25-22, 25-13, 25-14, on Thursday in a Prep League road match. The Rebels (11-7, 4-6 in league) got 10 kills from Libby Penn and nine from Jada Gritton and 16 digs from Ellen Chang.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

San Marino 12, La Cañada 5: The Spartans dropped to 4-15, 1-5 in the Rio Hondo League home defeat Thursday afternoon.

Robert Louk scored two goals for La Cañada.

Flintridge Prep 12, Brentwood 8: Flintridge Prep picked up a Prep League home win Tuesday. The Rebels are 12-3, 5-0 in league.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 232, Chaminade 253: The Tologs improved to 3-3 overall and in league after a Mission League triumph Thursday afternoon at Woodley Golf Course.
