Sports Roundup: La Cañada wrestling takes 2nd at Gabrielino

BOYS’ WRESTLING

La Cañada in Gabrielino High Duals: The Spartans took second in the event Saturday, their highest placement at the tournament in 10 years.

La Cañada posted wins against Montebello (51-25), Baldwin Park (78-6), Rosemead (61-28), Gladstone (75-6), Claremont (59-12) and Gabrielino (48-30). Its only defeat came against Walnut (48-26).

The Spartans received first-place efforts from Cameron Casey, David Sarkisian, Ben Donoho, Coleman Trulik and John Woodhouse. They got second-place finishes from Brandon Abboud and David Martoff and a third-place effort from Mason Littell.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Prep 56, Westridge 35: Mandy Manning finished with 21 points and Alex Kyriakakis added 10 on Monday to lead the visiting Rebels to a Prep League-opening victory. Flintridge Prep improved to 4-3.

Holy Martyrs 45, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 38: The Tologs (1-8) fell Saturday in the Pasadena Poly Tournament.

La Cañada 56, Duarte 55: The Spartans earned their second victory of the season-opening Duarte Tournament in a thriller on Friday evening.

With the victory, La Cañada improved to 2-1. Emmie Lew led the Spartans with 13 points, while Brooke Yasuda chipped in nine points and Lauren Scoville and Sydnee Lew each added eight points.

Providence 49, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 40: The Tologs lost in Pasadena Poly Tournament play on Friday. Kysa Hayashi had 18 points for Flintridge Sacred Heart.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Yeshiva 63, Flintridge Prep 53: The visiting Rebels (3-5) suffered a nonleague defeat Saturday. Flintridge Prep received 10 points from Jonathan Le and eight from Jack Cartwright.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Pasadena Poly 16, Flintridge Prep 2: Flintridge Prep dropped a Prep League home match Monday.

La Cañada in Villa Park Tournament: After a strong start, the Spartans were defeated by powerhouse Los Alamitos on Friday afternoon, 17-6.

Prior to Friday, La Cañada (2-2) earned a pair of victories on Thursday to climb above .500.

La Cañada first defeated Beckman, 13-2, at Villa Park before turning around and topping Royal on the same evening, 8-5.

Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy at Los Altos Holiday: It was a rough first day on Friday afternoon at the fifth annual event.

The Tologs (0-4) first lost to Birmingham, 11-4, at Sunny Hills High. Flintridge Sacred Heart followed up that defeat with a 16-6 loss to Sunny Hills.

The Rebels also went 0-2 with both contests at Los Altos.

Flintridge Prep (1-6) was first defeated by Montebello, 16-2, and then fell to Mark Keppel, 11-1.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Harvard-Westlake 3, Flintridge Prep 1: The Rebels suffered a defeat Saturday in the Aliso Cup.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Saugus 2, St. Francis 0: The host Golden Knights (3-2-1) dropped a consolation match Saturday in the Ralph Brandt Tournament.

Birmingham 3, St. Francis 2 (Birmingham wins on penalty kicks, 4-2): The Golden Knights fell Friday at home in a quarterfinal match of the Ralph Brandt Tournament. St. Francis got second-half goals from Ian Osdermatt and Scott Cross-Hernandez.
