Sports Roundup: La Cañada girls’ basketball rolls in playoff opener

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 49, Bonita 37: Tess Oakley-Stinson finished with 25 points, three steals and three blocks Thursday to propel the host Spartans to a CIF Southern Section Division II-AA first-round victory.

Brooke Yasuda collected eight points for La Cañada (24-4), which will travel to face Newbury Park in a second-round tilt on Saturday.

Lauren Scovile had five points and Sydnee Lew added four blocks for the Spartans.

Flintridge Prep 61, California 36: Host Flintridge Prep received a team-high 21 points from Kaitlyn Chen and 16 from Andie Kim to register a CIF Southern Section Division III-A first-round win Thursday.

Madison Manning added nine points for the fourth-seeded Rebels (21-5), who have won 16 games in a row and will take on Oxnard Pacifica in a second-round road game Saturday.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

La Cañada 5, Agoura 4: La Cañada (18-9) overcame a 4-0 deficit in the second half to earn a CIF Southern Section Division II first-round win Thursday at Oaks Christian High.

Madison Solares scored two goals, including the winner with 40 seconds left, to cap the comeback. Genevieve Fraipont registered three goals for La Cañada, which will take on top-seeded San Clemente in a quarterfinal match at 11 a.m. Saturday at Diamond Bar High.

La Cañada goalkeeper Carolyne Stern finished with 14 saves.

“We showed great maturity by not panicking and continuing to be methodical in our play,” La Cañada coach Ian Davidson said. “We continued to make our name on defense and scrap until the end.”
