Flintridge Prep, La Cañada open CIF volleyball playoffs at home

Winning Prep League championships has become a constant for the Flintridge Prep boys’ volleyball team.

The Rebels claimed their fourth straight league title this season.

As for La Cañada High, the Spartans won just their second Rio Hondo League title.

And with league championships come CIF Southern Section first-round playoff home matches.

So Tuesday night will be a big night for boys’ volleyball in La Cañada Flintridge, as the Spartans host West Torrance and third-seeded Flintridge Prep will welcome a wild-card entrant.

La Cañada (17-2) plays host to West Torrance (14-16), which finished third in the Pioneer League, in the first round of Division II play.

Should the Spartans prevail, they would advance to Thursday’s second round against Capistrano Valley or Corona Centennial. Last year, the Spartans also opened up at home against El Modena, with La Cañada moving on to the second round, where it lost to Aliso Niguel.

Flintridge Prep (21-4) is awaiting Whitney (12-12), the third-place team out of the Academy League, or Los Padres No. 4 entrant Orcutt Academy (7-13). Whitney wil host Orcutt on Saturday in a wild-card match.

Last season, the Rebels made a run all the way to the semifinals, where they were defeated by St. Margaret’s on the road in three games.

If the Rebels win on Tuesday, they’ll move into Thursday’s second round against St. Monica Catholic or Tustin.
