GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep in Best of the West Tournament: The Rebels came up just short in the EFGH Bracket Championship versus Newport Harbor and suffered their first defeat this season, 3-2, at Whittier California High on Saturday.

“It was good competition and we were able to find success as far as winning games,” Flintridge Prep Coach Esteban Chavez said. “The Newport game was funny.

“We were down, 3-1, at halftime and probably should have scored four or five goals in the second half on top of the one goal we did score. I’m not joking. We just couldn’t finish and that happens sometimes.”

Jenna Mijares and Mona Cesario scored a goal each for the Rebels (9-1-1), who finished 3-1 in the tournament.

Flintridge Prep began the day with a 2-0 victory over California. Molly Scott and Julia Gonzalez scored goals.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 49, South Torrance 31: Kristina Kurdoghlian finished with 11 points and Brooke Yasuda added eight points and three steals Saturday to help the Spartans (6-4) win the third-place game of the Arroyo Tournament.

La Cañada 2, Oaks Christian 1: Thanks to two second-half goals, the Spartans picked up their first win of the season in nonleague play Friday afternoon.

With the victory, La Cañada improved to 1-2-1.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Pasadena Poly 18, Flintridge Prep 4: The visiting Rebels fell in a Prep League match Friday. The Rebels are 2-5, 1-3 in league.
