Sports Roundup: La Cañada boys’ basketball drops tournament thriller to Alemany

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Alemany 68, La Cañada 61 (overtime): The Spartans dropped their first contest of pool play action of the Sierra Canyon Invitational on Tuesday evening.

Justin Kouyoumdjian hit eight three-pointers, including one in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game and finished with 32 points. La Cañada is 1-1.

On Monday, the Spartans kicked off their season with a 59-44 nonleague home victory over Eagle Rock.

WRESTLING

La Cañada at Beresford Invitational: The Spartans placed fourth in the 16-team tournament that took place at Rim of the World High and ended on Saturday.

Rim of the World won the event with 180.5 points, while the Spartans tallied 114 points.

The Spartans boasted a pair of champions and three runners-up as senior David Vardanian captured the heavyweight title and junior Ben Donoho finished as the 160-pound titlist.

Sophomore Aram Beshid finished second at 120 pounds, senior Andrew Aghadjanians took silver at 145 pounds and sophomore Johnny Vasily was runner-up at 160 pounds, while sophomore Brandon Abboud was third at 126 pounds and sophomore John Woodhouse also took the bronze at 195 pounds.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 4, La Cañada 1: The Rebels (4-0) broke a tie at the half with three second-half goals en route to a victory in pool play action of the Duarte Tournament.

Julia Gonzalez finished with two goals and one assist, while Mikaela Celeste added two goals and Mona Cesario had an assist.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Valencia 5, La Cañada 2: The Spartans surrendered three second-half goals and were defeated in nonleague road action Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, La Cañada dropped to 0-2-1 this season and will take a break until Dec. 16.

Previously, the Spartans tied with Mountain View, 0-0, on Thursday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 36, San Marino 35: Camilla Homans finished with 15 points to ignite the Tologs (2-4) on Tuesday in a pool-play game of the Pasadena Poly Tournament.
