BOYS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 76, South Pasadena 43: Winning Rio Hondo League championships isn’t anything new to La Cañada Coach Tom Hofman.

Hofman has led the Spartans to 23 league crown since taking over the program in 1986. La Cañada won its latest league title outright Friday.

“It’s always the first goal of the season, to win league,” said Hofman, who received 17 points and five assists from Justin Kouyoumdjian, 15 points from Grant Arthur and 13 from Koko Kurdoghian to help the Spartans improve to 22-3, 8-0 in league. “We’re also playing well heading down the stretch in the regular season and we want to keep that going into the playoffs.”

The Spartans wrapped up league with a resounding four-game lead over its nearest challengers.

“Our league is not that bad,” Hofman said. “There’s a lot of parity in our league and we’ve had to play well the whole way through.”
