Sports Roundup: La Cañada boys’ volleyball stays on path to league title

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
La Cañada 3, Gabrielino 0: The Spartans kept their chances of winning the program’s second-ever Rio Hondo League title by picking up a league road victory, 25-12, 25-21, 25-16 on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Connor Walbrecht tallied 14 kills, three aces, three blocks and 11 digs for the

Spartans (14-2, 6-1 in league). Blake Cornell added 10 kills and six blocks for La Cañada.

Should the Spartans defeat visiting San Marino on May 3, then the program would clinch at least a share of its first league title since 2006.

Previous to Tuesday, the Spartans won the Culver City Tournament, going 5-0 on Saturday with a 25-12 victory over Culver City in the championship match.

Temple City 3, Flintridge Prep 1: The visiting Rebels (15-2) saw Temple City post a 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19 nonleague win. Flintridge Prep received 21 kills from Dante Fregoso, and nine from Miles Johnson.

Loyola 3, St. Francis 0: Visiting St. Francis fell, 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 Mission League defeat Tuesday. The Golden Knights (10-8, 4-5 in league) received 12 kills from Sean Stephen and 22 assists from David Thompson.

BOYS’ GOLF
La Cañada 193, San Marino 194: The Spartans picked up a thrilling Rio Hondo League victory Tuesday afternoon at par-36 Santa Anita Golf Course.

Clark Lee led the Spartans (6-0 in league) with a one-under-par 35.

La Cañada can clinch a share of the Rio Hondo League tite with a win over San Marino on Wednesday at Brookside Golf Course and can claim the crown outright with a victory over South Pasadena at La Cañada Country Club on Thursday.

Flintridge Prep in Prep League individual prelims: The Rebels had a pair of players in the field of 28 compete Tuesday at Brookside Golf Course No. 2 in Pasadena. Ben Sacks recorded an eight-over-par 78 and Jonah Sacks carded an 80.

Ben Sacks is tied for third entering the league final Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Brookside Golf Course No. 1 and Jonah Sacks, the reigning league champion, is in fifth. The top four from the field of 15 will advance to the CIF Individual Tournament.

St. Francis 192, Arcadia 208: Eric Lin carded a three-under-par 33 on Monday for St. Francis in a nonleague home meet at Oakmont Country Club. Tommy Altmayer added a 38 for the Golden Knights.

SOFTBALL
La Cañada 9, Monrovia 4: A fifth straight victory on Tuesday afternoon kept the Spartans in the hunt in the Rio Hondo League standings.

With the win, La Cañada improved to 13-4 and 6-1 in league and is a half-game behind league-leading Temple City (7-1).

Rio Hondo Prep 2, Flintridge Prep 0: The Rebels were held to two hits in Tuesday’s Prep League defeat on the road.

Therese Oshiro had six strikeouts in the losing effort for Flintridge Prep (9-4, 4-3 in league).

BASEBALL
Monrovia 3, La Cañada 1: The Spartans scored first, but could not hold the lead in a Rio Hondo League home defeat Tuesday afternoon.

La Cañada (8-10, 2-5 in league) outhit Monrovia, 6-5, and scored in the first inning, but surrendered three runs in the fifth in the defeat.

Flintridge Prep 10, Rio Hondo Prep 0: Aidan Schraeder struck out six in six innings Tuesday to lift the visiting Rebels in a Prep League contest.

Hamilton Evans collected four hits and scored three runs for Flintridge Prep (11-5, 7-0 in league).

BOYS’ TENNIS
San Marino 15, La Cañada 3: The Spartans dropped only their third match of the season on the road versus the Rio Hondo League powerhouse Titans.

With the defeat, La Cañada dropped to 9-3 and 5-2 in league.

Flintridge Prep 10, Chadwick 8: The Rebels picked up a Prep League home win Tuesday at Arcadia Tennis Center. Flintridge Prep (8-6, 3-2 in league received a sweep in doubles from Gillies Linde and Christian Yeghanazar (6-1, 6-3, 6-2).
