Sports Roundup: La Cañada High girls’ basketball opens Rio Hondo League play with rout

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 75, Blair 9: The Spartans opened defense of their Rio Hondo League championship with an easy home victory Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Sophia Austin led La Cañada (12-4, 1-0) with 13 points and five rebounds, while Zoe Williams contributed nine points and six rebounds.

Eleven Spartans scored at least two points as La Cañada has now won 14 straight league contests.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 61, Blair 53: Despite a strong challenge, the Spartans prevailed in their Rio Hondo League opener Wednesday evening.

With the victory, defending league champion La Cañada (13-4, 1-0) won its 13th straight league game.

St. Francis 78, Chaminade 74 (overtime): The host Golden Knights picked up their first Mission League win of the season Wednesday. St. Francis improved to 11-5, 1-2 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 0, Chaminade 0: St. Francis garnered its seventh shutout of the season and its third in a row with its second consecutive scoreless deadlock in Wednesday evening’s Mission League match at St. Francis High.

The Golden Knights are 6-2-4, 1-0-2 in league.
