Sports Roundup: La Cañada girls’ basketball falls in divisional showdown

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 43, La Cañada 40: In a match-up of the third and fourth-ranked teams in Division III-A, the Spartans lost for only the second time this season in action of the Antelope Valley Showcase on Saturday afternoon.

Guard Sarah Kurdoghlian led the No. 4-ranked Spartans (13-2) in scoring with 13 points, while adding six rebounds. Amber Graves added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Zoe Williams chipped in six points and 11 rebounds.

Flintridge Prep 65, Rio Hondo Prep 36: Renae Tamura finished with 21 points and Taylor Yoshida added 16 on Friday to spur the visiting Rebels to a Prep League win.
Flintridge Prep (7-4, 3-1 in league) also got 13 points from Natalie Rozman.

Marymount 52, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 34: The Tologs dropped their Sunshine League opener on the road Thursday.

Flintridge Sacred Heart is now 12-5.

WRESTLING

La Cañada at Arroyo Classic: The Spartans finished with three top-five finishes at the tournament in El Monte on Saturday.

Overall, La Cañada finished 11th with 72 points, just ahead of Rio Hondo League opponent Monrovia (12th, 62 points).

Vardanian entered as the top seed and finished 3-1 with his lone loss coming to Coachella Valley’s Jesus Ruiz, 5-4, in the championship semifinals. Vardanian finished with three pins.

Shawayne Emadi also placed third for the Spartans at 182 pounds and similarly fell in the championship semifinals to Crespi’s Osteen Erich, 10-8.

Emadi was also 3-1 with three pins.

La Cañada’s David Sarkisian also placed fifth for the Spartans at 145 pounds. Sarkisian finished 2-2 with two falls followed by two loses.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 62, San Gabriel Academy 61: It was another thrilling nonleague victory for the Spartans, who witnessed San Gabriel Academy miss a buzzer-beating shot in Moorpark Showcase action.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 13-3 this season.

St. Francis 61, Salesian 39: It’s been a tough season for the Golden Knights, but they enjoyed a nice victory Saturday evening in nonleague play.

Six players scored nine or more points for St. Francis, which improved to 4-11.

The night before the Golden Knights fell at Loyola, 68-58, on Friday in Mission League action.
John Stephens and Brett Gangi each scored 15 points for St. Francis, which is 0-2 in league.

St. Genevieve 56, Flintridge Prep 39: The Rebels fell in nonleague action Saturday afternoon in the Moorpark Showcase.

With the defeat, Flintridge Prep dropped to 10-3.

A day prior, Kendall Kikkawa finished with 16 points Friday to pace the visiting Rebels to a 76-53 Prep League win against Rio Hondo Prep.

Dante Fregoso added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Flintridge Prep (2-0 in league), which also received 12 points from Jake Althouse and 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds from Andrew Tsangeos.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 3, Chadwick 2: Matt Wang, Tim Treinen and Ben Yentresca scored second-half goals for the Rebels to lead them to victory at the Glendale Sports Complex on Friday in their Prep league opener.

With the win, Prep improved to 6-1-1.

Loyola 2, St. Francis 0: The Golden Knights lost in Mission League play Friday afternoon against their archrivals.

St. Francis, which is winless over its last seven matches, dropped to 0-1-1 in league and 2-5-2 overall.

La Cañada 1, Hart 1: The Spartans played to a nonleague tie Friday afternoon.
With the result, the Spartans’ record is now 3-4-4.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 4, Westridge 1: The visiting Rebels began Prep League play Friday with a win. Flintridge Prep improved to 6-1-5.
