Ramses Barden signs with Jacksonville Jaguars

After playing for and then being released by the New York Giants, Flintridge Prep graduate Ramses Barden explored the possibility of joining a new team to revive his career.

The wide receiver thought he found a potential suitor in the Buffalo Bills after signing a reserve contract in January. However, Barden’s stay with Buffalo concluded July 21, when he was released.

Barden found work Wednesday when he signed a free-agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Terms of the contract were not released, but Barden was happy to tweet about the news, indicating he’s been a longtime fan of the Jaguars.

“Nice to find a home,” Barden tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. “On the low, the Jaguars have been my favorite team since [2014]. Don’t have to cheer in silence no more!”

Jacksonville was in need of adding some new receivers following the suspensions of Justin Blackmon and Ace Sanders. In addition, Cecil Shorts and Allen Robinson are out with hamstring injuries.

Now Barden, a former All-Area pick who helped Flintridge Prep win a CIF Southern Section championship in 2003, will have an opportunity to earn a potential starting job. The 6-foot-6 Barden, 28, graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before being taken in the third round of the 2009 draft.

Barden spent parts of four seasons with the Giants, winning a Super Bowl in 2011. His best season came in 2012, when he caught 14 passes for 220 yards in 12 games. Overall, he’s caught 29 passes for 394 yards in 29 games.

Jacksonville’s next preseason game is Friday at home against Tampa Bay.

The Jaguars finished 4-12 and in third place in the AFC South Division last year. Jacksonville will begin its season Sept. 7 with a road game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
