A Glendale man was arrested Thursday for allegedly driving under the influence after his car struck the center divider of the Foothill (210) Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge and burst into flames, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The crash took place several minutes after the suspect first bounced his sedan off the center divider wall near the Olive Avenue offramp of the southbound 5 Freeway in Burbank, at about 2 p.m., according to CHP Officer Kevin Denmon.

Witnesses told investigators that although the car appeared to sustain damage in the first crash, the driver continued traveling at a high rate of speed, making the transition from the 5 Freeway to the eastbound Ventura (134) Freeway, then to the westbound 210 Freeway toward La Cañada.

“He again struck the center divider and this time it caused the car to catch on fire,” said Denmon, who did not release the driver’s name, but said he was in his 70s and driving alone.

The man was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena for treatment of minor injuries.
