SPORTS ROUNDUP: Rebels take sixth place in Los Altos Tournament

Flintridge Prep in Los Altos Tournament: The Rebels took sixth place in the two-day tournament’s platinum division at Schurr High Saturday after they fell to South Pasadena, 9-8, after a five-meter shot that would have tied the game for Prep was blocked with eight seconds left.
“We are ecstatic, last year we were in the gold division and to finish sixth out of 24 teams is the platinum division great,” Flintridge Prep Coach Dan Hare said.
Saturday was filled with some tough losses for Flintridge Prep after it enjoyed two incredible overtime victories Friday. Prep opened the day with a 13-11 loss to Glendale and then fell to Long Beach Poly, 17-4, which put them in the tournament’s fifth-place match with the Tigers.
Diego Delgado and Ethan Vandeventer both scored four goals in Prep’s loss to the Nitros with Delgado and Vandeventer adding three blocks and two assists, respectively. Goalie Brian Khin had a team-high seven blocks and tied team-highs in steals and assists with three and two, respectively.
The Rebels pulled off two dramatic overtime victories over Chadwick, 6-5, and J Serra, 10-9, Friday with Delgado and Vandeventer leading the way.
Delgado had seven goals — including both game-winners against Chadwick and J Serra — and two assists Friday, while Vandeventer had four goals and three assists on the day.
Flintridge Prep tied Chadwick at 5 with 1.1 seconds left in regulation before Delgado scored the winner in overtime. Delgado and Vandeventer both finished with two goals and an assist against the Dolphins. It was the Rebels’ first win over its foe from the Prep League in five years, Prep Coach Dan Hare said.
The Rebels (4-0) didn’t lead until the fourth quarter against J Serra to open the tournament. Delgado scored in overtime again to deliver the win, as he had a team-high five goals in the match.
Flintridge Prep had to overcome a three-goal deficit after the first period. Prep kept chipping away at the lead, bringing it to two, 7-5, after three quarters before it went on a three-goal run to start the fourth, gave up a goal and then answered right back with another score from Vandeventer on a Delgado assist to tie it at 9 on a long-distance shot with a minute left in regulation.
Delgado sealed the Prep victory on a back-handed score in overtime.
“It was just an absolutely amazing game,” Flintridge Prep Coach Dan Hare said. “I don’t think anybody could have believed it, it was just a stunning development.”
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Flintridge Prep 9, Mayfield 9 (Flintridge Prep win in games, 78-71): Flintridge Prep’s top two singles players each swept Thursday to spark the Rebels on Thursday in a Prep League opener at Arroyo Seco Park.
Roya Gheissari swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0. Abby Letts also won her three sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to help the Rebels improve to 2-4.
Burbank 11, La Cañada 1: Disaster struck La Cañada (4-1) when half of its No. 1 doubles team, Linnea Frazier, dislocated her knee in the second round, which brought on paramedics and ended the match early. It also stood for the Spartans’ first loss of the season, as Claire Huh and Serena Zheng, 6-0, had their only win in No. 2 doubles.
La Cañada Coach Will Moravec said he doesn’t expect Frazier back any time soon, if at all, this season.
“It’s tough losing Linnea, you’re guaranteed two or three points with her,” Moravec said. “There’s really no one to replace her.”
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 3, La Cañada 2: The Spartans overcame a two-game deficit to push the Knights to five games but couldn’t pull out the match in the final game at home Thursday in a 25-14, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-6 loss.
Kendall Walbrecht finished with a team-high 15 kills for La Cañada, which got 10 more from Micaela Anderson and six from Jenna Gray. The Spartans (3-4) also received 29 assists from Leigh Sclafani and 19 digs from Madison Teodo.
Chadwick 3, Flintridge Prep 0: The Rebels opened up Prep League play on the road with a loss on Friday night, 25-15, 25-16, 25-7.
Prep, which fell to 3-2, was led by Dani Motte, who had nine kills, while Lauren Stiles chipped in six.
Flintridge Prep 3, Ramona Convent 0: Katherine Bogaard finished with 26 assists and three aces Thursday to lead the Rebels to a 25-13, 25-8, 25-15 nonleague road victory. Flintridge Prep (3-1) got 10 kills and three aces from Lauren Stiles and eight kills from Ella Worley.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 224, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 273: Katie Hartwig shot an 11-over-par 49 on Thursday for the Tologs in a Mission League match at Balboa Golf Course in Encino.
